On an early February morning, Clark Center Park became the gathering spot for the youth-focused fishing group Beast of the East, which operates under the Tennessee Bass Federation. Over 100 anglers from Middle and East Tennessee launched 33 boats on Melton Hill Lake, all seeking bass. Among them, 14-year-old Korbin Crabtree from Overton County excitedly reeled in a 50-pound catch.
The top competitors received prizes such as fishing reels, rods, and contributions to their college funds. The TBF also ensured every young participant received a prize, even those who didn’t land a fish.
Clark Center Park, a 40-acre facility along Bluff Creek Road in Anderson County, offers a wide range of outdoor activities including birding, boating, biking, fishing, hiking, paddling, picnicking, stargazing, swimming, and wildlife viewing. Its recently upgraded boat ramp has become a favorite spot for local fishermen, and the wheelchair-accessible fishing ramp allows everyone to enjoy the sport.
The park serves as the entrance to the Gallaher Bend Greenway, providing access to Solway Bend and Freels Bend, areas recognized for their scientific, historic, habitat, and biodiversity importance. While access to protected zones is limited, the public can join occasional guided walks.
Beast of the East is a community-driven group that promotes catch-and-release fishing, encourages local involvement, and introduces young people to the sport. Sherrie and Jeff Stafford from Sparta, Tennessee, have managed the youth fishing program for decades. What began with just six kids has grown to include more than 200 youth, ages 9 to 17.
Many tournament participants had never visited Clark Center Park before. After such an enjoyable experience, the group voted to return for another tournament next year.
