Joe Gomez has admitted that his future at Liverpool is far from clear as he approaches the final year of his contract this summer.

The 28-year-old defender, whose current deal runs until 2027, is the club’s longest-serving player, having joined from Charlton Athletic in a £6 million move under Brendan Rodgers in 2015.

Across 11 seasons, Gomez has helped Liverpool win multiple trophies, though injuries have limited him to 272 appearances. In the 2025–26 campaign, he made 31 appearances in all competitions under Arne Slot, including 16 starts, but only started six Premier League matches.

When asked about his plans beyond this season, Gomez said: “I think anything can happen. The honest answer is I don’t know. I’ve only got a year left, so I’m not sure. Whatever is meant to be will be, I guess. I’m incredibly grateful to have spent this time here. To have 11 years at a club like this is something I’ll always appreciate. All I can do is be thankful and see what happens.”

This season, Gomez has primarily served as cover for starting centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, also filling in at right-back on occasion. Liverpool’s defensive options will be strengthened this summer with the arrival of £60 million French defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, while Italian centre-back Giovanni Leoni is recovering from a ruptured ACL that derailed his debut season. Young Senegalese defender Mor Talla Ndiaye, signed from Amitie FC for £1 million in January, has made the bench in the last two matches and is highly rated.

Gomez’s situation may also be affected by Konate’s contract, which expires at the end of June. Although Konate indicated after April’s Merseyside derby that he expected to sign an extension, terms have not been finalised nearly a month later, leaving uncertainty.

Gomez remains a popular figure in the dressing room and among fans. The 15-cap England international’s quality has never been questioned, and he would have many more appearances if not for injury misfortunes. Two years ago, he came close to leaving when a £45 million fee was agreed with Newcastle United, contingent on Anthony Gordon moving to Liverpool for £75 million, but Newcastle pulled out after raising funds elsewhere. Last summer, AC Milan showed strong interest, but the collapse of Marc Guehi’s proposed move from Crystal Palace to Liverpool kept Gomez at Anfield.

Under Slot, Gomez has been mainly a backup, starting 12 league games across the past two seasons. If he seeks more regular playing time and a suitable offer arrives, it would make sense for Liverpool to sell him this summer rather than lose him for free in 12 months. However, there is concern about losing another experienced winner, with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson set to depart this month, and long-serving goalkeeper Alisson attracting interest from Juventus.
