Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva fell short in the final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid, losing to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. The 19-year-old ninth seed was defeated by the world No. 23 with a score of 3:6, 5:7. In the second set, Andreeva failed to convert two set points while leading 5:4.
This was the second meeting between the two players; Kostyuk previously beat Andreeva in the quarterfinals of Brisbane earlier this year. Andreeva, ranked eighth in the world and the top Russian, has five WTA singles titles to her name, and this was her seventh career final. The 23-year-old Kostyuk secured her third WTA title and her first at the prestigious WTA 1000 level.

Andreeva and Diana Shnaider are also set to compete in the doubles final in Madrid on Sunday. Andreeva becomes the third player in history to reach both the singles and doubles finals at the Madrid tournament in the same year—Venus Williams (2010) and Victoria Azarenka (2011) both won the doubles title but lost the singles final.

The winner of the Madrid singles event receives over €1 million in prize money and 1,000 ranking points. The runner-up earns €535,500 and 650 points.
