Edin Terzic signs for Athletic Club

Edin Terzic arrives at San Mamés backed by a stat that validates Athletic Club’s bet on his profile. The German coach, chosen as the new rojiblanco boss after Ernesto Valverde’s departure, ranks among the best historical points-per-game averages in the Bundesliga among managers who have taken charge of at least 50 matches.
According to Opta statistics, Terzic averages 1.97 points per game, a figure that places him close to some of the most influential names in recent German league history. Ahead of him are Pep Guardiola (2.52), Vincent Kompany (2.50), Hansi Flick (2.45), Xabi Alonso (2.17), and Ottmar Hitzfeld (1.98). The new Athletic coach sits just behind Hitzfeld, a true legend of German football.
This data helps put Terzic’s arrival in Bilbao into context. Athletic officially announced the agreement with the German tactician for the next two seasons, running until June 30, 2028, after Valverde confirmed he would not continue leading the team next campaign. The change comes after a hugely significant period both institutionally and sportively for “Txingurri,” who recently reached 500 official matches as rojiblanco manager.
Terzic, 43, built his reputation at Borussia Dortmund, where he coached in two separate spells. With the German club, he won the DFB-Pokal in 2021, fought for the Bundesliga title until the final matchday in 2023, and reached the Champions League final in 2024.
Now, Athletic bring in a young manager already accustomed to high-pressure scenarios, with a statistical résumé that places him among the most productive coaches in modern Bundesliga history.
